SynopsisPepe is a Spanish cyclist competing in an multi-stage Iberian cycling race similar to the Tour de France. He is a support rider for one of the teams competing in the race, and his role is to assist the team's top rider in winning the overall race. As the story unfolds, the racers are set to ride through Pepe's home town in Andalusia on the same day as the wedding of his elder brother Angel to his former girlfriend Carmen. Their relationship was a factor in his decision to leave the town to pursue professional cycling, and the wedding is a frustrating reminder that his career hasn't turned out as he would have liked. Now, with the sponsor planning to drop him from the team and his family and friends cheering him on, Pepe abandons his assigned role and strives for glory.

When you think 'awesome sports anime', you may think of edge-of-your-seat boxing matches, high intensity tennis matches or mind-boggling game plans and strategy. So what about cycling? There's a linear path, the cyclists only do one thing (pedal) and they're sitting on their bikes. Seems like a yawn-fest, doesn't it?
And that's exactly the opposite of what Nasu - The Summer of Andalusia presents.
I'm not big on sports anime, and in the real world, I am not exactly the biggest fan of competitive cycling. The only time I ever pay attention to the Tour de France is when someone wins, and other than that, I can't bring myself to pay any more attention to the sport (except perhaps for the animated film The Triplets of Belleville, but I digress as it isn't anime).
Nasu tells the story of Pépé Benengeli, a cyclist who is having a tour across his home country. You may think that not a lot can go on in an anime where the protagonist spends most of his time pedalling and not talking, but you will be surprised how much this short movie tells about Pépé and the people of Andalusia. The plot presses on as Pépé cycles and the people from his past watch him on the television. It sounds boring, but this anime has a lot of energy and heart in the telling of its story.
The art and animation was done by Studio Ghibli, who has a long history in anime, and who has a history of producing some spectacular-looking anime. Nasu is no exception. The character design is simple in that Studio Ghibli way, and the animation is excellent. The packs that the cyclists travel in down long, winding roads are animated well. The backgrounds are well done, even though most of it seems like barren desert and the characters' movements are fluid and life-like.
The sound helped pump energy into the anime, was festive when it needed to be and quieter when it should. Most of the score is upbeat and inspiring, suited to the atmosphere in a sports anime.
Now, even though the movie is short with a run time of some forty-odd minutes, we learn so much about the characters. Pépé is a driven young man, and his drive and personality is developed as the movie progresses. His brother and sister-in-law have important roles in the anime, and their characterisation allows us to see two people who understand Pépé much better than he would like to think. The rest of the cast is an assortment of Andalusians who support Pépé's endeavours and gives the anime that extra "oomph" of energy. Nothing is more energetic than an excited group of fans, as anyone who's ever been around cheering sports fans will know.
I had a great time watching Nasu. I enjoyed Pépé's story, and I also learned so much about the sport of competitive cycling. I definitely learned to appreciate cyclists a lot more after watching; cycling for hours on end over miles and miles is very admirable.
If you want a charming anime about sports with a touch of family drama and human perseverance, then do watch Nasu - The Summer of Andalusia. You won't be wasting your time. read more

If you like Over Drive for the cycling aspect, Nasu is the only other cycling anime I know of, and it's pretty good.
"Nasu: Summer in Andalusia follows the story of a professional Spanish cyclist, Pepe Benengeli, as he competes in the Vuelta a España road bicycle race through his home town in the Iberian region of Andalusia. As the story progresses, Pepe is faced with frustrating consequences, with him facing pressure from his sponsors and the wedding of his former girlfriend, Carmen, to his elder brother, Angel, coinciding on the same day of the penultimate stage of the bicycle race, and strives to gain the respect of his team and family."
It has also been an announced that a sequel to the film, Nasu 2, is currently being produced, which will be set in Japan on the Japan Cup Cycle Road Race, and is slated to be released in 2007.
Both about challenge and pushing yourself to the limit. Same sport. Over Drive is a TV series. Nasu - The Summer of Andalusia - a movie, which has a continuation as OVA: Nasu: A Migratory Bird with Suitcase. If you enjoy riding your bike and also love challenges - these animes are for you.

Well then, if you liked the first part, I don't see any reasons that you need to miss out on the second part :D
If you ask me .. for me the second part was better, pretty much in all the ways .. the animation, the comedy, the race etc...
Other than this there is not much to say, unless if I want to spoil, which I don't.
