It pains me a lot to give this series a 7. In fact, I really want to give it a 9 or 10 for this review. However, a few things stop it from being higher, actually only two things really. The first thing is simple. It never keeps the amazement factor rolling, the first three episodes were fantastic, but it slow goes to great, then good, then just plain OK. The second, and in my opinion much more important thing is that it stop just when things get interesting. It force me to read the manga from which this is adapted from and actually made me a lot more disappointed in the anime. The Manga is fantastic, easily one of the best I have ever read, in fact currently it is my second favorite of all time. If the anime had gotten enough support, or if it had gotten enough care to completely adapt the manga through and through then this could easily be a different review where I say ,"This is the best anime ever no exaggeration." Alas, it is not, so it pains me immensely to have to give it a score of only good.
It is definitely interesting. It is a blend of romantic comedy, horror, ecchi, zombie (yes, zombies are in my mind it own separate genre, sort of like how it is for gaming), and even a little bit of action. It starts off intriguing, but after episode four things start to become chaotic. It feels like a chronological mess (which to people who has read the manga, it is) and things seems to be out of place, or it feels like an event was suppose to happen but didn't. The ending was also felt incomplete and felt like a setup for something else. However, I will say that in the story department this anime is amazing at creating side stories and giving us background details on some of the characters.
Yes, Sankarea only gets a 7 for art. Yes I know most people would give a much higher score with it beautiful environment, but to be quite honest I seen better, from the same year and from anime such as Sword Art Online and a bunch more. The character design are also pretty average outside a few exception like Rea and Chihiro and a few other.
Yeah, you saw the score correctly. No typos and accidents, the music is fantastic through and through. I don't know the name of the composer, but once I do I will listen to every song compose by him/her. Other then the two reasons mention in to introduction, the music is another huge reason why it pains me greatly give the anime a OK score. Each track match the tone of the event and two songs, Honto no Kimochi and Sukeru Hitomi, stands as some of my favorite songs from not only anime, but of all mediums gaming including (which is quite an amazing feat, cause I like myself some game music).
Now we get to the one that was the most greatly affected by the short runtime. Don't get me wrong, the show stills have great character - Rea being one of my favorite character even if we only consider the anime. However, the anime is missing much need explanation and character development for the other characters which the manga provides. It provides enough for me to get interested, but stops short of me caring about any of the characters besides the above mentioned Rea.
As with any review, anime or otherwise, the enjoyment is not part of the final verdict. The reason is because I may love a series, but not be able to give a good score for it because of it's up irrefutable flaws. This is one of those cases. I love Sankarea it have a lot of morals and ideals that are similar to mine, and Rea is one of my favorite characters and IS my favorite female protagonist. Also as stated the music is amazing which greatly factors and can even change my personal enjoyment on anything, anime or not. Also as stated above I read the Manga which allows me to make sense of the cryptic story and allows be to care for each characters even minor ones. It is extremely disappointing that this anime didn't adapt everything otherwise my overall score could be identical to my enjoyment one.
At this point I probably sound like a broken tape recorder so I really don't want to repeat what I have said a million time. But I really need to stress that this anime could have been a "This is the best thing since sliced bread!" anime instead of a meh one if it had done a full adaptation of the manga. So here's me hoping for season two, really crossing my finger on it.
Had absolutely no idea what to expect coming into this anime.
I pretty much stumbled across it by watching some anime OPs on YouTube and this one looked actually kinda good.
Then I came into it and things quickly...fell apart. But it was nothing too horrible, as this was a great watch.
As always, my reviews are generally spoiler free as all I do is express my opinion on some thoughts and don't go into any detail explaining the story.
The story has really great build-up on the first 3 episodes. The events that happen in this time period are shocking, I'll say that much, and the shocking events do kick off the main plot rather nicely. However, as the story progresses, you might consider thinking to yourself "No, Sankarea, please stop, this is getting embarrassing." Even more so, the ending kinda seems to leave you on a huge cliffhanger, kinda screaming at you to watch the OVA or some sort of other bonus content (the manga or the specials or anything else, really). I hate when shows do this crap, rather than fully finishing the story and not leaving you asking for a continuation, because to put it simply - if you're watching Sankarea without any intent of watching any bonus content, you will realize that it hasn't ended.
As for the other episodes themselves, they were mostly alright. The concept the way this show imagines zombies is pretty unique and interesting and the backstory episodes (I think there were three of them - one for Wanko, one for Mero and one for...Babu? What?) were very interesting, and I really wish to know more about Sanka, more about Chihiro. (I haven't watched the specials, so excuse me).
Though I am not the guy who enjoys ecchi all that much, and with all of the sexualization of women, I kinda felt very uncomfortable watching ecchi scenes.
What can I say, the artwork is fantastic in this one. Everything from the backgrounds to the characters themselves screams good quality animation. I kinda have no gripes for anything, except that some characters seem to be drawn a little bit...weirdly. Primarily Rea's father (dunno, I find his design kind of awkward for some reason) and Rea herself.
The opening and ending cinematics are gorgeous, really.
Sound was pretty much pitch perfect. I didn't see any audio editing issues and all character voices, sound effects and music pretty much fit every single occassion. It's been a long time since I saw an anime with great sound design, because the recent ones I watched were kinda disappointing in terms of sound.
The main characters are actually well developed and they're pretty interesting to watch, having the thought of what happened in their lives at the back of your head. Though I found that my favorite character from this show wasn't even a main character. As a matter of fact, I find Mero the most interesting, and she's a support character. I just find her behavior to be pretty much appealing and really makes me wish Mero had more screentime than she got. Rea, to me, is pretty much the most interesting main character, with her backstory being really well thought out and her behavior is pretty much expected. Chihiro was alright. I didn't really like him all that much, simply because he's obsessed with zombies and I really think zombies lost all their appeal in the recent years, at least to me. That's not to say that Chihiro was a bad character by any means, no. He's a very nice character who knows what to do and when to do it, and none of his actions feel slapped on per se.
The support characters are there to do their job, and they do it well. But again - I wish Mero had more screentime than she got.
Without knowing what to expect, I really enjoyed watching Sankarea. It was a really nice twist to the slice of life genre I usually am used to. Before anyone tells me - yes, I know this anime isn't slice of life. However, it has some themes of slice of life, which I find myself comparing them and it's all a very nice twist, really.
The only enjoyment killer is the ending, but that's about it, honestly.
I think Sankarea was a decent anime. It's got an alright story which was killed off by the ending, great visuals, amazing sound and all around decent characters, I really don't think this anime should be passed up. It's just that the ending can leave a very very sour taste in your mouth after watching it, but everything else is really nice about it.
I can't say I reget watching it, really.
Final Score: 8/10

Both of these Anime are dark Gothic revolving around the unusual romance a guy has with... a girl out of horror who just wants to be... normal... and not a monster.
Both series are about an offbeat high school boy and his supernatural girlfriend, with plot elements including attempts to better understand her unusual situation and dark past, their developing relationship, and her desire to be a normal girl. Sankarea is overall lighter in tone compared to Tasogare Otome, but they both have serious and dramatic moments in spades.
Both anime are somewhat similar because the female MC's are not normal human being, the girl in sankarea is a zombie while in tasogare the girl is a ghost. Both anime are good and has a similar feeling when you watch it.
Both have quite similar plot especially the unusual romance between a human and the dead.
unusual couples = unusual romance
+Both have Horror, Romance, School, Shounen, Supernatural Genre.
+Both have a strange girl beside main male character.
+Both feel same while watching them.
+Both main main girl character have dark past .
Both deal with issues of death--although this show has a ghost and Sankarea has a zombie, the relationships they have with their respective main characters is pretty similar as well.
~ Gothic theme
~ Main girls characters are shy and just want to be accepted by others.
~ Main guy protects Main girl
~ Main guy tries to solve her *mystery*
~ Similar art style
~ Similar feeling overall regarding their relationship
~ Horror and romance genres combined with comedy
Both deal with romance between a human boy and a non human girl. Both have ecchi in them and you will likely find the story in each to be darker than what you might expect.
Both series features the theme of the supernatural and undead as the main female protagonist bonds with the male protagonist after certain events.
Both series contains a story that is mixed with drama, comedy, some ecchi, emotions, and romance.
Both series has a similar feeling.
Both Anime is about love after death, one is zombie and other one is ghost is kinda the same.....
Pretty much the same "weird" romance, both have also some mystery to unfold and the characters are quite funny!
Supernatural love interests the anime. With one being a zombie and the other being a ghost. Both have a above average main character, encountering a interesting girl.
Both anime have an unusual coupling. In Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, its boy-ghost, while in Sankarea, the love interest is boy-zombie. They were both also released and ended around the same time. However, the animation styles are a little different but the main girl characters look similar.
The story lines are both similar as well as the main girl character looks like each other.
Both main heroines are of supernatural origin that want to enjoy the happiness of a normal life while the main male protagonists search for answers to their conditions.
Both contain Romance between the living and the living dead. As well as helping each other out and looking out for each other in their day to day lives.
• Both of these anime are dark.
• Both of these anime are revolving around a guy.
+ Romance stories about high school students, and the brought-back-to-life female lead
+ Similar mixes of comedy, drama, and a little horror
- The girl in Amnesia is a ghost who can only be seen by a few people while in Sankarea the girl is a zombie
- Amnesia has much more of a school setting and a much bleaker atmosphere while Sankarea takes place in more places and has more fanservice
Both anime are about a main character falling in love with a girl that is deceased/undead/dead/whatever you may call it.
Its kind of a love story about some regular guy and supernatural long black haired bishoujo with a nice art and good storyline
Both shows revolve around a romance where one character is no longer of the living. Dusk Maiden of Amnesia (Tasogare Otome x Amnesia) follows a boy who falls in love with a ghost while Sankarea is about a boy who's love interest becomes a zombie. Tasogare Otome has the darker atmosphere of the two shows, while Sankarea has a much brighter look. Tasogare Otome has more of the ghost story feel where Sankarea is more a love story.
Dark theme. Both main characters aren't normal girl.Ghost and Zombie.
MC's both deal with the supernatural quite well and it makes sense considering their outsider status.
The main females are both beautiful and strange, giving the romance plots similar feels despite the stories and themes of the shows being quite different.
Both shows have ecchi elements but in a more sexy and mature way (esp in Monogatari's case) than most anime can manage to pull off.
My goodness its hard to believe that studio deen made such a nice looking anime (sankarea) that it almost look like Shaft made it (people who made bakemonogatari). The animation is so alike with bakemonogatari being more uppaced with its scene changes and being a bit more unconventional but this show to (Sankarea) looks like it has alot in store for us.
The main characters are somewhat similar in personality. The style of the show is also quite similar, although Bakemonogatari has a serious plot with comedy spread throughout, whilst Sankarea has a serious plot in the beginning and comedy at the end.
Both has that same atmosphere where they talk about some awesome stuff that I can't describe very well with an awesome music in the background . Watch first few episodes of both , you will feel the same way . Also the artwork .
These to anime have a very similar pace and atmosphere. They both deal with the supernatural, and helping the main love interest with a sort of supernatural ailment. The artwork is similar in both. Also, the main characters are similar in the way they talk, and in their random perversion.
