SynopsisWhen a group of friends decide to make a movie over a long summer holiday, they end up learning a little about filmmaking and a lot more about each other and themselves. What begins as a simple way to avoid the summer doldrums quickly turns into something much more complex, intimate and revealing, as the maturing relationships between the members of the young cast take on new, and sometimes very unexpected, turns.

This was the surprise of winter 2012 anime for me. I was really skeptical going into this show, because it looked like it could have been quite a boring harem, or just bland overall.
But it didn't; it blew away my expectations for the better. And I'm here to explain why you should give this anime a chance. Here goes:
Story: 9/10
The story's development is really unique. It starts with a strange occurence: what seems like an alien ship crashes to Earth and the protagonist, Kaito, is of course in the mix of things. With this being said, the show starts out with an air of mystery. Apparently our other main character, Ichika, is from "out of the country" but we all know what's going on here...
The romance is thick in this show. This is evident from the second episode on. Many love triangles ensue. The thing is, this show does them very well. The story so far is paced wonderfully and every episode has a "cliffhanger" type feel to it. It makes you want to see the next episode immediately.
The story's main plot is one that focuses on a couple of friends spending a summer together to film a movie. Through this filming, many relationships are established as well as broken.
Furthermore, the romance is done very well - you won't see characters think only to themselves about loving/liking someone else. Instead, the characters ACTUALLY TAKE ACTION. This is hugely important and unique in a time filled with bland romance shows in which the main character is either in a harem and does not choose a lover at the end - or the romance simply develops in the final episodes of the show, creating a rushed feel.
This show is different BECAUSE it actually pursues each characters' feelings. Confessions actually happen in this show. And they are done fantastically. The story gets a 9 because it delivers romantically as well as comedically. The comedy is absolutely hilarious because of our troll, Remon. She is truly a devil, but more on that in the character section.
The overall feel of the story so far is a comedic, yet VERY serious romance in which each characters' feelings are explored very well. It should also be noted that there is a fair bit of fanservice in here.
Sound - 8/10
The opening to the anime is decent, but I usually skip it because I do not particularly love it. For me to listen to an opening, it has to either be catchy or just plain damn good. I recommend you listen to it though, because I am just too picky with music.
That being said, the music employed throughout the show is not necessarily memorable, but it is there and it can add to the mood (especially the comedy).
** Finally, the ending theme is great, which is a huge bonus. Once the episode ends, you are greeted with a nice soothing ending upon which you can reflect on what you just saw that episode. Typically the ending of each episode is full of romantic suspense and this ending adds to that feeling greatly. I can't say enough about how this ending evokes emotions from you and is REALLY well placed. Great piece of music.
Character - 10/10
The characters are great in this show. All of them are unique, although some can be a bit cliche. However, the fact that they all actually try to pursue their wanted romance really adds to it.
Anyway I digress;
Ishigaki, Tetsurou -
This character is probably one of my favorite just because he is so realistic. He (of course as this is a romance show) loves one of the other characters, a childhood friend, but she is of course oblivious because she is in love with somebody else. He wants nothing for her to be happy, so he actually assists her in her pursuit of love.
Kirishima, Kaito -
What you would call the "protagonist" in this anime. He is a shaggy haired, big glasses, and somewhat awkward fellow - yet you can't help but like him. He is of course caught in a love triangle, but his love for one girl in particular is evident. Kaito turned out to be a fantastic character.
Kitahara, Mio -
Mio is quiet and is unnoticed by the one she loves. Twists in the plot will frequently pair her up with her lover, yet she is too shy to do anything. She really starts to shine mid way through the anime and grows as a character.
Takatsuki, Ichika -
The "other" protagonist of which we are introduced to in the first moments of the show. She is a peculiar character from "out of the country" and is immediately accepted at school. There is a notable shift in her maturity in the sense that she matures (mentally, of course) drastically and realizes that she must take action. She is really a great character as you will see for yourself later down the road.
Tanigawa, Kanna -
She is also involved in a love triangle, and she too is a very likable character. At first, she seems to put lots of effort into making the man she loves notice her and to actually see that she loves him. But these are indirect attempts. She realizes this, and claims that she simply has to be herself. Her development as a character was heavy in the first episodes on the anime. She seems to like the spotlight and is always getting herself involved in situations. However, don't take this to mean that she is obnoxious. She is very tolerable and only really tries to take the spotlight so the one she loves actually takes notice of her.
Yamano, Remon -
She is the troll of this show and my favorite character. She is a favorite most likely because she is just so devious and hilarious. She is not involved romantically, but she really knows how to be a sort of cupid in this anime. She seems to be omniscient and manipulates all the other characters frequently and hilariously. She rules the comedy department.
Enjoyment - 10/10
I just really have enjoyed this show so far. The characters all seem real and are likable. The situations they find themselves in are also just hilarious. I can't say enough about how much I have actually enjoyed this anime. But I don't want to go crazy and go on a rant. Just know that this anime really is quite enjoyable!
Overall - 9/10
This show gets a 9 because it has delivered pretty well on all fronts and is definitely one of the better anime of the season. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Many compare this to "Onegai Teacher", but I have personally not seen that show. Therefore, my claims that it is unique may be slightly biased in a sense, but it really is refreshing to see a romance done so well and realisitically.
**Those coming in expecting a drama similar to AnoHana will be disappointed. This show is a standalone and a whole different anime. AnoHana focused on the drama of letting a loved one go, while also incorporating romantic drama on the side. AnoNatsu is filled with romantic drama and is where it shines. Therefore, it is hard-pressed for one to compare these two anime so closely because they are so vastly different. One key point is that both of these anime incorporate drama heavily and fantastically. All in all, you must go into this show with a clear frame of mind, or at least an open mind to ensure maximum enjoyment.
With all of that said, alll comments, good or bad are appreciated. I'd prefer constructive criticism, but you can't stop the trolls haha.

AnoNatsu is a strange case: a competent JC Staff romance anime, that works as an installment to an old series (the Onegai series), dealing with filmmaking, sci-fi, and summer holidays despite being a Winter 2012 anime.
Directed by Nagai Tatsuyuki (Ano Hana, Toradora!), this anime is a mix of the new and old conventions of romance anime: love triangles, genre fusion, and more. Kirishima Kaito (Shimazaki Nobunaga), who looks awfully a lot like Jintan from AnoHana, is your average geek interested in using an old film camera he found in the attic. Equipped with various ISO films, he practices cinematography along with his friend, Ishigaki Tetsurou (Ogihara Hideki). Tanigawa Kanna (Ishihara Kaori), a blue-haired Chie from Persona 4, joins to be closer with Kaito while Kitahara Mio (Asumi Kana), a quiet girl, helps out. Looking through the viewfinder, Kaito looks at the running field from his classroom and sees a girl with red hair, Takatsuki Ichika (Tomatsu Haruka), looking lost; his face blushes and we find ourselves watching a silly case of ‘love at first sight.’
I did not expect much from the work at first: anything by JC Staff, especially the art, these days frightens me. Yet, Nagai’s success in AnoHana shows no declining in this work; the animation quality does not falter below acceptable levels and sometimes astound me in the most dramatic episodes. Its art style is a rehash of AnoHana and yet, I don’t mind; it looks too beautiful. Does this work stop the negative perception of JC Staff? Of course not, but AnoNatsu is undeniably pretty; warm, saturated colors blossom everywhere and the summer season seems almost touchable.
Nagai shows his directing skills in AnoNatsu and excels in developing romances. What amazes me is how he puts all those boring, corny romantic scenes and twist it around into something different. Episode 3’s ending features the leads in a train station leaving; the sequence at the end may send Michael Curtiz, the director of the classic film Casablanca, packing. The editing and directing in most episodes are worthy of analysis; Kanna’s subtle gestures, like twiddling her hair, is a curious artistic touch. Anyone who enjoys observing the artistic subtle choices of directors and editors will have a fun time watching Ano Natsu.
AnoNatsu pays homage to the old romance works, especially its parent series: the Onegai franchise. If AnoNatsu goes to a cheese shop, it will be hard to differentiate parmesan and the work; it is after all a tribute to previous works. Romance can be as melodramatic as the ef series or cheesy as seen here. I admire its cheesiness; it’s honest and proud of it. I’d rather see a corny work once in a while than see the same ten melodramatic romance works. While I have not watched any of the Onegai works, it is worth pointing out that there are huge similarities: Yamano Remon (Tamura Yukari) is an almost direct copy of Morino Ichigo and some of the locations are a nod to the previous work too. There is something admirable about the cheesiness and homages AnoNatsu has.
Speaking of Remon, she and Kanna steal the show. Enigmatic Remon, a senior student, helps out filming and her antics are outrageous. Functioning both as comic relief and supporting character, Remon is an example of how smart a comic relief character can be. She can be seen as the mastermind behind the romances while having fun dipping her toes in the murky waters of love. Kanna, on the other hand, is how tsundere characters should act. Kanna steps beyond the stereotype and her character develops and hardens as the show goes on; she is someone you want to give a hug to. Kanna’s problems is woven inside the love triangles and her frustration and sadness show by the voice actress; I thought this was voiced by a professional, but she is voiced by Ishihara Kaori -- a singer in YuiKaori and somewhat new to the voice acting arena. She is one of the best finds in the anime industry and Nagai uses her skills wisely.
“sign” by Ray shows KOTOKO’s songwriting skills in full blast. As any KOTOKO song goes, the sounds of synthesizers undulate their way to your ears. The animation that goes with it doesn’t feel right; at the beginning of the OP, there are some great directing choices: a film reel shows Ichika smiling and cuts off while the title fades into view. As it goes on though, the animators get lazier and show the characters without inspiration: we see them sitting down, standing, turning around, and a close-up of Ichika’s breasts. It is disconcerting to see a KOTOKO song -- hyper, romantic -- accompany a botched work; this is the only sequence of animation that you can say, “Ah, it’s JC Staff.”
“Vidro Moyou” by Nagi Yanagi -- yes, she’s from supercell -- does a whole lot better. Copying AnoHana, the minimalist ED is beautiful, dancing gracefully with its bittersweet, soothing music. I’m in love with the ED and it ranks up there in my top ten favorite EDs. It’s hard to say much because it’s so perfect. Just watch the damn ED.
In defense of AnoNatsu, I think it is fair to argue against other reviewers and viewers for one thing: AnoNatsu is not AnoHana; stop comparing them. After hearing talk from both sides of the spectrum, I’ve been raising my eyebrows on any mention of AnoHana when it comes to plot; both works look similar aesthetically, but that’s as far as that path goes. AnoHana is a bittersweet dramatic work that focuses on the aftermath of losing someone precious to you; AnoNatsu is a romance anime. See the difference? A more logical approach: compare AnoNatsu to Toradora!. I’m not a big fan of Toradora!, so I will not go on that route; nevertheless, it is frustrating to see stupid comments on how much “AnoHana is better omfg >:(“
What I cannot defend is AnoNatsu’s numerous flaws. People can get irate from the cheesiness; this is, of course, caused by difference in taste and opinion; I think it’s rational to argue in that perspective even if I disagree with it. What I can get behind is the talk on the personalities of the two leading characters: Kaito and Ichika. Their romance is genuine, but they themselves make me yawn. There are so many things going on outside the leading characters’ reach that we don’t really get to know them; instead, we know more about Kanna, Tetsurou, Mio, and even Remon. When problems between the two leads do exist, they aren’t interesting at all -- they bore me. Most of their scenes are lackluster. I was more emotionally invested into Kanna than anyone else. What I say previously is true: Remon and Kanna steal the show.
There is also an exhausting episode dealing with the most pressing problem in summer: which sexy bras should the girls wear? This episode comes out from nowhere and you ask, “Do you really need a beach episode?” It also introduces other female characters that distract the deeply stemmed love decahedron. While its next episode saves AnoNatsu from being a harem show through Nagai’s ever creative decisions as director, I find the setting of that episode pointless. Most, if not all, beach episodes should just die.
The last three episodes feel rushed, giving negative vibes to anyone who has watched Angel Beats!. There is a huge amount of compression; AnoNatsu is a work that should have given itself more leeway and needs a few more episodes to make sure its ending makes sense. Episode 11 suddenly speeds up the pacing and it makes you wonder, “Am I watching a different show?” Some of the events presented in the final episodes are unbelievable because of the lack of buildup. For a cheesy straightforward romance show, it has one hell of a time confusing me.
AnoNatsu is imperfect, but it adds to the charm when I think about it. I’m a filmmaker and I know most student films suck. There are lovely shots, but everything else like story is terrible. There is beauty in creating imperfection though; the strengths are worth remembering for and we make nostalgic memories out of filming. We brush away the bad spots and think about the good things that happen; for example, there are scenes that has Kaito filming Tetsurou parodying Ultraman and Godzilla. They know it’s fun and games. There is something magical with the camera rolling when you see your friends acting; the fun of that is presented in the smiling faces of the characters.
Those smiles are the purest, untarnished forms of memories. read more

Until finishing Ano Natsu, I had thought the OBVIOUS similarities between the two were nothing more than examples of the anime industry's lack of originality. But it turns out they were written by the same person, with Ano Natsu linking into Onegai Teacher at the very end. So, it wasn't theft: it was just the writer being lazy. Glad that's clear, now.
Two alien Mary Sues come from space. They have the same basic character designs. One becomes a teacher; one becomes a student. They fall in love with scrawny, four-eyed midgets. There's drama.
Same producer, same style, same atmosphere. Both stories are about an alien girl (with red hair) come to earth and meet the Hero. Both stories are happened in a school at remote area. Both Hero are wearing glasses and are students. Both Heroine are older than the Heros. Both have a girl likes the Hero. Yukari is acting very similar characters in both animes.
Same writer, story, character designs, setting and even opening theme singer (KOTOKO)
If you've watched one then you've practically watched the other and can update your MAL list accordingly ... disappointingly unoriginal ..

Oh come on, how similar can you get with these two? Good looking aliens? Check. Guy romantically involved with said alien? Check. School setting? Check. The main difference I can point out is the storyline. Onegai Teacher tipped more on the drama scale. AnoNatsu has better art style and animation though. Anyway, both were entertaining to watch.
Aside from the having the same writer, Yousuke Kuroda, the overall tone of the series follows the same structure as Onegai Teacher.
1) A lot of inner monologues between the two main characters' and exploring their emotions with each other. The viewers are shown all the worries and thoughts of the characters. As if they were living in the character's shoes.
2) Easy to understand conflicts. A lot of explanations with dialogues, monologues, and clearly structured scenes to reassure all aspects of the viewer's thoughts.
The story is practically the same, only with characters with different names, but if they liked the romantic theme of the boy who falls in love with the beautiful alien woman and the existence of a strong love triangle, then I think this series should of interest.

Ano Natsu de Matteru and Onegai Teacher are romance anime that have a very similar storyline where the main male protagonists fall in love with an alien girl from outer space. Both series feature amazing animation and character design. The conflicts that carry the story are pretty much the same and many of the characters bear a strong resemblance, in terms of design and personality. It's safe to say that, if you enjoyed watching Ano Natsu de Matteru, you will most likely enjoy Onegai Teacher, and vice versa.
It's the pseudo-remake of Onegai Teacher. Rejoice.

As alot of people have already pointed out, this anime is very similar to onegai teacher. (same writer/producer) However, i'd like to extrapolate from that and go as far as to say that the two animes occur in the same universe.
Firstly, lets compare Ichigo (strawberry) vs. Remon (lemon). Looks very similar and have the same VA. They've implied in the last couple of episodes that Remon had standstills. She mentions about being "eternally 17" and how Tetsurou teases Remon for "still being in highschool". In addition, her personality is almost one in the same as ichigo. Also Remon reiterates the words ichigo spoke, "Don't stop. Stay in motion. Go forward."
Lake and the trees. Seems like a reoccurring theme. Nagano lake was where onegai teacher took place, hinting at the same location.
Ichika Takatsuki is in fact Kei x Mizhuo's daughter???
Mizuho is known to have been half human and half alien. The implication is such that it is acceptable in her society to bring back humans to live together.
Lastly Kei was 155cm and Mizuho was 170cm
assuming basic mandelian genetics (which height is pretty well approximated to be)
155+170 / 2 = 162.5.
Ichika is 163cm. Coincidence? Well you can say so is everything else.
Kei has red eyes, Mizuho has purple eyes and Ichika has blue eyes.
Both story revolve around a "normal" high school kid and his life along with his friend, where suddenly an alien girl/lady pops in.
Even the personalities of the characters are kinda similar.
Both have a red headed main female character and both females have a similar objective or desire involving earth plus both females come from space
The story line of both is similar. Both have an alien and human romance in it with a good ending, give the same feeling/atmosphere, have something to do with the theme of summer, have similar art, and are interesting.
Alot of similarities in both series over all if u like 1 you will definitely like the other!

Both Series is about alien girls (Both have red hair and glasses) come to earth and fall in love with a human boy (both have glasses). Both series have more than one love triangle going on and spuriously the main setting is at school (Like any other high school harem) Both series also sharing the same genres such as Comedy, Romance, Sci-Fi, Ecchi & Drama.
The only differance between Please Teacher and Ano Natsu de matteru is that the alien became a teacher at the school (Please Teacher) instead of a Grade 12 student.
Never seen two series that's so much alike with each other so if like either show then i'm about 99% sure that you'll enjoy the other one.

Anohana and Ano Natsu de Matteru are both emotional anime that have a nearly identical mode of story telling and main male protagonists trying to fulfill the wish of a girl that may eventually disappear from their lives. They also have really similar characters - a socially awkward male, a paranormal girl and their friends in between who are in a pinch regarding their love lives. Both series offer superb animation and feature a lot of touching moments that will most likely make you let out tears and leave you with a happy smile in the end. If you liked watching one of them you shouldn't hesitate to try out the other.
Both anime focus on a group of friends. Both have a romance between the main male character and the main female character. The main female character in both anime are not really human. Both have a love triangle-type thing among the group of friends. Both have the same kind of feeling to them.

The main characters are rather similar s well. The protagonist is somewhat cynical and the heroine is strange.
Additionally, the director worked on both of these series hence the dramatic story. And as for the stories, both series are build from friendship, trials, misunderstandings, and bonds.
