If you are curious soft tennis is a modified version of normal tennis using rubber balls, and was created after being introduced to the east in the early 1900's. Thus, five airheads entertain us with their insane antics and personalities as they play it. Softenni is one of the most hit or miss comedies I have recently watched.
With a comedy it comes down to the characters and how they interact. The captain Chitose who is unable to hit a single ball, enjoys eating, and is basically the most annoying and least important. Compared to her we have Asuna, who is the instigator of all that is ecchi with her delusions, and her partner Kotone whom has fallen in love with their coach and is aiming for Wimbledon. We have the foreigner Eli who is the rival in love, and Kurusu who is a hardcore cosplayer. Typically Asuna and Kotone are the ones training and playing while Kurusu and Eli do random things in the background.
Unfortunately, there are only a few occasions where there is an actual match. There are two different teams we meet throughout the season, and while kotone his hard headed and competitive they act more as friends than rivals. The matches in general don't matter, as they turn into a giant joke within the first few seconds. Despite the huge focus on comedy, there is a general plot as they aim towards the nationals, but no huge progress.
On a whole I would like to think I enjoyed this series a lot. However there was two occasions I gave the episode a 1/5 and the rest of the scores are all either 2's, 4's, or 5's for the most part. This is a issue with a lot of comedies that are do not split the episode into mini sub stories. With the focus on something, let's say a windy day on the tennis court, for a whole episode it can get old fast if it doesn't provide any laughs in the first place.
As a tennis coach I was able to enjoy the insanity that was softenni. A combination of ecchi, tsukkomi, as well as situational humor there is no doubt that it can be entertaining. I wouldn't strongly recommend this show as there are slightly stronger comedies out there, but there wouldn't be any harm in trying it out. To start off, this is not really a review since its still airing. Treat this as first impressions of the anime.
Story: well there is not much of a story here, its about girls in a soft tennis club and their life basically. I like that this anime does not take itself seriously, its a huge plus for some people like me and a minus for the serious ones. There is alot of funny shit and gags that you would not expect from a sports anime. I laughed pretty hard at some parts. Some people dont get the jokes so they say its bad but actually its not. Im not usually into sports anime but this one is great. There is alot of ecchi stuff too so thats another plus for me.
Art & Characters: The art is not bad, characters are well done. Each character has their unique personality. It matches the not serious type anime. I especially like the appearance of Kotone, she would be my favorite character from this series. The sound is good too but nothing above average here.
Dislikes: There is only one thing i really dislike and thats the fucked up costumes that Kurusu wears. I cant explain it well but they really piss me off, it would have been a much better anime with out that. If used like once then it would be fine but no, i think even that is too much for the not serious anime type.
Overall: I would say its a pretty good anime, ecchi fans will love it. There is alot censorship in the TV version so it will be worth getting the Blurays read more

Sport and musical flavored bishoujo fan-servicing goodness. These are what one of the best-selling anime genre for male looks like, cute girls, cute activities, and if possible, suggestively lesbian.
Both are not entirely legit as sport or musical genre, but are the very candidate of the bishoujo anime appealing to male demography. We all know that the females' media preference for man on man is increasing (It's 21st century, Sir) but what we should also know is that it's also true the other way round.
Oh yes the similarities, both show features variety of different girls so fans can pair them up to their liking. Not to mention that both shows are the slice-of-life comedy with focus around recreational activities. Production quality may not quite as high as KyoAni goodness, but Softenni is encouraged for K-On! lovers.
Both anime are part of the recent huuuuge moe wave that's coming on. Both are focused on a particular interest, and both anime actually show the interest. Both anime have an all-girls cast, and even their personalities are similar. Ritsu and Kotone are both the super-energetic person, Tsumugi and Elizabeth are both the adorable, soft-voiced but rich girls and Yayoi and Azusa are the overly cute/moe girls. Both contain suggestive lesbian content and their demography is mostly male.

Girls taking recreational activities in a school setting. Sparkling shining exciting fun enjoyable moment fun of fun girl fun life. Incite pedophilia, increase heart rate and make you go all Humbert Humbert. Apply to only men and lesbians.
Mood, tone, cast, genre, formula, target, how god classify this show are all overly similar. True, the degree of pedoness, funniness, ecchiness and any-ness may vary, but iPhone 1,2,3,4,5,6 or Nokia 1280 all can make a phone call.
Five girls in a sports club, led by a man. Simple. Personally, none of them is of my taste, but "Softenni" shows a cast and humor slightly better, while "Ro-Kyu-Bu", lacking any innovation in all directions, invests most of the twelve episodes in the girls and their relationships with the coach. In addition, "Softenni" at least is more honest in your intent: fanservice and more fanservice, and, if possible, one or another tennis match. Now "Ro-Kyu-Bu!" masks this content with your innocent visual and lolis characters. Wrong, very wrong...
Both involve lolis, sports and fanservice. Not more to say
